3D Modelling of Tideway Vent poems

We were give the task of creating a 3D model for the machine shop to allow their CAM software to be programmed for the Juaristi floor borer to machine a poem into the “ribbon” on the surface of casting. 

The large casting supplied was not of any standard geometric shape which made modelling almost impossible.

We solved the problem by 3D scanning the casting. We focused on the areas that required machining then imported the featured mesh into Solidworks where the supplied DXF file of the poem could be overlayed. The finished model could then be exported to the CAM software to begin the offline programming.
